Cadiz, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the Bay of Cadiz and joined to the rest of Spain by a narrow isthmus, is not only the oldest but also the southernmost Western European city.
Founded by the Phoenicians and later occupied by Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths and Muslims, the old part of Cadiz is a historic monument, partially surrounded by walls, and with highlighted monuments such as the Cathedral, the church of Santa Cruz, Torre Tavira, the castles of Santa Catalina and San Sebastian, and the Puertas de Tierra, the former city gate.
